APM Terminals has invested €47M in the former TCB Barcelona terminal, a straddle carrier-direct operation, in recent months and is reaping the rewards, with a claimed productivity of 150 MPBH on one ship earlier this month.

The performance of 150 MPBH was achieved "on a vessel of the latest generation."

The company did not disclose the average number of cranes deployed over the ship, or whether the achievement was gross or net.

However, as a straddle carrier-direct terminal, the operation is self-(de)coupling at both quay and stack, so there are no handover delays.

Two post-NPX cranes were recently transferred to Barcelona from APM Terminals Pier 400, Los Angeles, via upgrade and refurbishment work by ZPMC in Shanghai.

With these cranes, the former TCB flagship terminal can now work ships of up to 23 containers across the beam.

The cranes have a maximum lift under beam of 100 tonnes and can also operate in twin 20 mode, which allows the terminal to increase further its level of service, "offering customers the highest productivity of all the Mediterranean terminals."

APM Terminals Barcelona also recently acquired 29 new straddle carriers, the biggest single investment to date in Barcelona terminal in this type of equipment.

It has also introduced a new Rack platform for refrigerator connections, which has allowed it to increase its connection capacity by 31%.

"We renew our commitment to the Port of Barcelona, outfitting ourselves with the technical equipment necessary to operate the most modern container ships that call in the Catalan capital," said Narcís Pavón, General Manager of APM Terminals Barcelona.
